The stomach requires rest. All foods and liquids should be withheld for three to six hours from the last vomiting episode. Then by tablespoon every five minutes, five water or an electrolyte solution, such as Gatorade or Pedialyte or Lytren (from your druggist) for 1 hour. If tolerated for 3-4 hours, then begin Jell-O and liquids, such as fruit juice and clear carbonated beverages as much as tolerated. If vomiting resumes again, withhold fluids for 3-4 hours and repeat the procedure. If again vomiting resumes, a physician should be notified. Keep children flat in bed until vomiting subsides and try to remember to keep room temperature liquids in very small quantities given every few minutes. Remember that fever may be the cause of vomiting and diarrhea, as well as many viral and nonspecific infections. However, dehydration may ensue if adequate replacement of liquids are not maintained within 18-24 hours. Vomiting associated with other symptoms should be seen by a physician.
