Usually associated with vomiting, it is often caused by a viral infection. Diarrhea is the method whereby the body washes out the germs quicker than they can multiply. If medications to stop diarrhea are given, germs are allowed to remain in the digestive tract and multiply, henceforth, restarting the diarrhea. Dehydration can be avoided by simply keeping as much going in the top, going in orally, as is coming out the bottom. Begin with the electrolyte solution mentioned with vomiting or Gatorade, then in 4 hours progress to ½ strength tea, jello, apple juice, clear carbonated beverages, popsicles and boullion. Progress in 12 to 24 hours to full liquids, cooked cereals, ripe bananas, soda crackers and light food. Remember the importance of oral intake of water for a person with vomiting and diarrhea. Dehydration can be monitored as above, watching urine color. Call the doctor for severe stomach pain, vomiting more than 6 hours, blood with diarrhea or more than 8 stools in 24 hours.
